Wolfreton High School

An inspirational 21st century learning environment

Creating the best learning environment for generations

This £22 million new school has been a significant development for East Riding in Yorkshire, creating a fresh and stimulating learning environment for 1,500 young people. The project involved consolidating Wolfreton Secondary School and Sixth Form College into one site in Willerby. This single location has fulfilled a long held ambition, advancing Wolfreton’s ambition to achieve outstanding standards of learning and education. State of the art facilities are coupled with opportunities every day for old- er pupils to act as role models for younger children.

Abundant use of natural light was central to the creation of a well-planned learning environment that feels inspiring. A total of 33 sections of VELUX Modular Skylights have been deployed throughout the buildings, some us- ing as many as 12 modules. The new school represents a radical change for Wolfreton. The old buildings were listed amongst the worst in the country due to their worn out condition, with regular floods and inefficient energy consumption.

Proven benefits of natural daylight

The building contractors, BAM Construction Ltd-North East, have under- taken substantial research and development into creating modern learn- ing spaces. A child’s ability to gather and process information vastly im- proves when they are taught in a bright and ventilated environment, so plentiful daylight is crucial for learning. Furthermore, a child’s activity lev- els are known to increase when the quality of daylight is preserved.

Elegant and energy efficient

Ryder Architecture and BAM Construction Ltd-North East specified VE- LUX Modular Skylights for a complete design solution. As well as provid- ing a welcoming internal aesthetic, the solution is cost-effective and offers a robust life expectancy.

A light, airy atmosphere was created with a combination of units, all positioned at a subtle 5° pitch.

"We are delighted with the VMS products installed on our Hull Schools. Their considered design and finish allowed for swift and safe installation. This was one of our first experiences of VMS and the support of VELUX was inva- luable.
