Invergowrie Primary School

A bright and inspiring learning environment

When Perth and Kinross Council deemed the old Invergowrie Primary School as “outdated”, plans were made to build a new £8 million state-of-the-art facility on the adjacent playing fields. The resulting new eight-class building accommodates 235 primary pupils, and 40 younger children in an integrated nursery, ensuring a seamless transition through the stages of early education.

At the heart of the building is a breakout space. This was designed to be shared by nursery children and primary one pupils, supporting young friendships and facilitating close working relationships between staff. Here and elsewhere, the use of VELUX Modular Skylights ensures abundant natural daylight, establishing a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

Impressive new facilities for the whole school include:

  • 8 classrooms
  • Breakout space
  • Gym area
  • Drama space
  • Dining centre
  • Improved offices and staffroom
  • Teaching spaces with electronic smart boards
  • Learning resource centre
  • Meeting room available for community use
  • General purpose room for music and drama
  • New vehicular and pedestrian access with associated lay-by and bus stop.

An unusual aspect of the new design is the extensive ‘living’ green roof. The rich variety of flora and fauna supports local bio-diversity and creates a visual feast for children and staff.

Proven benefits of natural daylight

Research shows that a child’s ability to gather and process information vastly improves when they are taught in a bright and ventilated environment. Plenty of daylight and fresh air are crucial for learning in every way, helping to form positive early educational experiences.

"Usually rooflights require a specialist installation but with all the necessary components of the VELUX Modular Skylights coming from the one supplier it meant we made the decision to install it ourselves. The installation was very fast due to the pre-fabricated parts and made the school very quickly weather tight. I would not hesitate to use this system again on future projects.

Slimline design and energy efficient

The need to create the right environment is key to the design of every new school. The generous specification of VELUX Modular Skylights was instrumental in meeting this need for Invergowrie. Durable and cost-effective, VELUX Modular Skylights provide a striking internal aesthetic, together with a robust life expectancy.

The installation was seamless, taking place alongside other works including the installation the ‘living roof’. The pre-fabricated design ensured speed and minimum disruption throughout the process.
